Vishing and Smishing: Voice and Text Phishing Explained

Phishing doesn't stop at your inbox. Vishing (voice phishing) and smishing (SMS phishing) use phone calls and text messages to trick people into handing over passwords, wiring money, or clicking malicious links. These attacks follow the same playbook every time: the caller or sender establishes trust, creates urgency, and tells you to keep it secret.

In this video, Endsight's Cybersecurity Practice Manager Steve Hicks breaks down how vishing and smishing attacks work, shares real examples his team has encountered (from fake help desk calls to gift card scams to impersonated relatives), and explains the one habit that stops most of these attacks cold: multi-channel verification. If someone contacts you on one channel and asks you to take action, verify the request through a different channel you initiate yourself. It takes 30 seconds and it works.
